Don’t Be a Joke-Hole; Support Your Local

It just kills me to see another business closing in Topeka, let alone 3! With these local businesses closing, it makes it hard for other entrepreneurs to entertain the idea of opening a business here in Topeka. Personally, I get sick of the same corporate restaurants & businesses. I want choices, I want options, I want something new. I enjoy spending money with locally owned establishments knowing that there is a good chance that the money I spend will stay right here in Kansas.

I’ve been told by numerous business owners here in Topeka that Topekans seem to get in a rut of doing the same thing and going to the same corporate establishments over and over again. Why is that? Is it that local businesses are that bad compared to the big names? Or is it that Topekans are so wrapped up in their own lives that they don’t slow down and think about the locals. Is there no hometown loyalty here? Do we neglect these establishments because we are self centered and don’t want other Topekans to succeed? I just don’t get it. Are we that damn finicky?

According to WIBW, Francis O’Dooley’s is closed for good, Hastings will be open until January 25th, and Lucky Dog’s will be open New Year’s eve. Hit them up one last time instead of going to KC to spend hundreds of bucks. They have a band and will probably be showing their loyal customers a great time for their last hurrah. See WIBW’s article “Three Topeka Businesses Closing Doors”

Please share your feedback. Why is it that you think some local establishments have a hard of a time making it in our Capital City? Why is it so hard for us to support local business?

Francis O’Dooley’s is closing due to a lease issue. Hastings is closing because it’s cheaper to rent a movie at those Red Boxes, and it costs less to buy one at Wal-Mart. Lucky Dog’s on the other hand I’ve never even heard of so I really can’t or shouldn’t comment.

Thanks for the insight Mike. That makes more sense, but doesn’t make more cents. ;-)

Hastings is not a “local” company.

I know. I would rather see Hastings staying in business rather than having to spend money at Red Box, Netflix, & Wal-Mart. Hastings was also a BIG space in the Fairlawn Plaza. Hopefully this will not have a domino effect on the mall. I just hate to see any business closing in Topeka, but you can’t win them all.
